More than 20 people took to the streets with litter-pickers to clean up a Somerset village on Sunday.

Littering has been a big problem in Wedmore in recent years.

Members of the public took it into their own hands and joined in with The Big Tidy Up.

The event was put together by Green Wedmore, a voluntary initiative which aims to protect the village’s environment.

Anthony Lamb, a member of the group, said he often picked up a whole rubbish bag of litter on a regular basis.

He was heavily involved in organising the event.

He said: “I am very keen on keeping the environment tidy and I was appalled by the way people treated it.”

Among the volunteers were members of Wedmore girl guides and scouts, who are participating in a nationwide campaign to Clean For The Queen.

Once the litter was collected, the volunteers divided up what they had found into recyclable and general waste.
