A weekly market returned to the area around Birnbeck Pier last week, with the aim to raise awareness of the deteriorating structure.

The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust, which hopes to restore Birnbeck Pier, has organised a market to take place every Friday by Pier View Café in Birnbeck Road.

Stallholders will sell meat and fruit and vegetables from 10am-4pm, and more traders are expected to go along over the coming weeks.

A Trust spokesman said: “Our market has proved to be a real hit.”

Entry is free, but donations can be made to the Trust.

The Trust is also organising a two-day festival, to take place on June 3-4, to mark the pier’s 150th anniversary.

Celebrations will include a Victorian sideshow and re-enactments, rides and children’s entertainment.

There will also be music and a bar from 10am-10pm.
