A coastal footpath has reopened in Weston-super-Mare thanks to £16,000 worth of funding.

The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust reopened the cliffside Spring Cove coastal pathway after Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme provided a £12,000 grant, which was awarded by public vote, with the Friends of the Old Pier donating an additional £4,000.

Weston’s mayor Mike Lyall cut a ribbon to open the pathway at its Birkett Road entrance and then led the procession along to its Kewstoke Road finish, opposite the toll road.

The path was overgrown and had debris but in recent months volunteers helped to clear the path of rubbish.

A trust spokesman said: “This has been a fantastic achievement for the trust as our constitution does not solely focus on Birnbeck Pier but all the surrounding area.

“We have regenerated an area of Birnbeck for the members of the public to enjoy for many years to come, our thanks to every volunteer who made this possible.”
