The accident and emergency (A&E) department at Weston General Hospital will close temporarily overnight between 10pm and 8am each day, beginning at 10pm this evening.

Hospital bosses announced the department would temporarily closed after inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found it is not safe for patients.

The Grange Road hospital struggles to recruit staff and was ordered to make urgent changes to its ‘inadequate’ emergency services.

Since the announcement, a petition has been launched to retain a 24-hour A&E service in Weston and a protest has been organised.

A public board meeting will also take place today at 10am. At the meeting, hospital bosses will attempt to reassure people the appropriate plans are in place for the ambulance service and other hospitals to cope with the additional workload caused by the closure. Advice will also be given to people on what they should do in an emergency.

The meeting will take place in the lecture theatre of the hospital’s academy, at its Grange Road site. It will begin at 10am.
