Volunteers at Sunshine Hospital Radio spent two years raising the £25,000 needed for the revamp, and its reopening coincided with the station’s 40th anniversary.

The studio has been made more accessible for wheelchair-users, and the broadcasting equipment has been replaced to make it easier to create new shows.

Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis opened it on Saturday afternoon.

Radio station chairman Jo Newey said: “It’s taken a lot of hard work and determination from our volunteers to get to this point, but the goal of entertaining the patients and bringing smiles to the wards has always been a powerful incentive.”
