The board of directors at Weston Area Health NHS Trust will meet publicly 12 hours before the hospital’s A&E department closes overnight for the first time.

Weston General Hospital’s A&E department will close temporarily from 10pm each evening to 8am each morning from Tuesday.

The decision to close the emergency department was taken after a damning report from the Care Quality Commission found it was unsafe, with the hospital’s inability to recruit doctors for its A&E a huge issue.

A petition has been launched to save the A&E, and Protect Our NHS and Weston Labour Party are set to protest against the closure outside of the hospital from 9am on Tuesday.

Now the hospital has announced its board of directors will host a public meeting on Tuesday in a bid to reassure people plans are in place to provide overnight care in Bristol and Taunton.

The meeting will take place in the lecture theatre of the hospital’s academy, at its Grange Road site. It will begin at 10am.
