WESTON Hospicecare was lit up with more than 120 garden candles to remember loved ones last week.

The hospice’s second Light up a Life Event, held at the care unit in Uphill, raised more than £4,000 for the local charity which helps patients coping with a terminal illness.

There were more than 100 personal dedications and 30 local businesses took part in the remembrance night.

Popular TV actor John Challis, who has been the star of The Playhouse’s pantomime Aladdin, also attended the event.

He said: “It has been a privilege to be amongst people who have dedicated themselves to the care of people who are in desperate need.”

Event organiser, Kaya Evans, said: “Having moved the event due to bad weather from December 15 we were desperate to try and get the event together just after Christmas as a way of offering people the chance to light a candle flare in recognition of hope for the New Year.

“The support was staggering and we were so privileged that John Challis and his wife were able to join in with us.”

Weston Hospicecare has also teamed up with www.muchloved.org to provide people with an online facility where friends, family and colleagues can celebrate the life of a loved one.

It allows people to create an online tribute and dedicate a page to them. They can also add music, pictures, special memories and messages and the site also offers the chance for people to donate to the hospice.
