A WESTON resident has won first place in his debut strongman competition.

Vangelis Papantoniou, of Locking Parklands, competed in Bristol’s Strongest Man contest at the weekend, and took the first-place prize ahead of 12 others.

The events included lifting 100kg weights above his head, carrying 110kg in each hand while walking and squatting with 160kg weights.

Mr Papantoniou only began training in June at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre.

He has another competition in three weeks in Bargoed in Wales, and hopes to take part in all the events across the country.

He said: “I am positive about the competition in Wales, I’m definitely hoping to win.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I saw it on TV and thought ‘that’s something I could do’. It’s just a case of taking it step by step.”
