The Weston Sand Sculpture Festival is offering people with visual impairments the chance to touch the masterpieces.
Ahead of the festival’s closing on October 7, the organisers have decided to take down the rope fences surrounding the artworks on its final day and allow people with visual impairments and their carers free access to the sculptures.
The concept was born out of a request made by one visitor in 2012 and organisers say it is their favourite day of the season.
Event co-organiser Alex Messchaert said: “We thought it was a brilliant idea and now it is probably our favourite day of the season because we, too, get to appreciate the sculptures from another perspective when we experience the joy expressed by those who would not usually get to appreciate the work.”
Sculptor and co-organiser Nicola Wood added: “We believe an appreciation of art and an enjoyment for sculpture should not be limited to those that can see.”
