Coastguard teams from Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea teamed up yesterday (Sunday) after concerns were raised for a person in a kayak, who looked to be stranded just north of Brean Down.

The team were called just after 3.30pm to the river.

A spokesman for Burnham Coastguard said: “We quickly spotted the yellow kayak which was on a lower ridge of mud just above the water line, some communication was established via the operations room.”

Despite the difficulty, the kayaker decided to wait for the incoming tide to return to the shore.

The spokesman added: “The member of public who called in the incident did exactly the right thing as the kayak was in a stranded position.

“If you have any doubts about someone or something along the coast, then without delay Dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
