A Weston apprentice has been selected to represent the UK at the WorldSkills final in Abu Dhabi later this year.

Matthew Doe, aged 22, has been undergoing intense training alongside studying to become an electrician.

The skills he will need to showcase include aircraft maintenance, mechanical engineering and cyber security and all will be in a competitive environment.

Matthew said: “I couldn’t have achieved any of this without the support of my family. I’ve wanted to do electrical installation for a long time and I have been getting up early every morning to train my skill.”

Matthew has been training for more than two years in regional, national and European heats and has beaten off thousands to take on the ultimate engineering challenge in October.

He will now be one of 32 people to take part in the competition from October 14-19 in Abu Dhabi.
