Weston-super-Mare Coastguard Rescue Team was called to stop a group of people walking out to Birnbeck Island yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
The crew persuaded the group of back to dry land after they were spotted trying to cross the causeway to the island by a member of the public.
An coastguard spokesman said: “The rocky causeway becomes uncovered at very low tides and looks like an easy way to access the island.
“However, tides are extremely fast in the Bristol Channel, and the causeway can go from being completely dry to completely submerged in a surprisingly short amount of time.”
The incident was the crew’s first call out of the year.
