A Weston-super-Mare woman celebrated a significant birthday with a letter from the Queen last week.

Dorcas Sheppard enjoyed afternoon tea with her close friends on April 10 to mark her 100th birthday.

She is the eldest of four sisters and lived and worked in Street.

She attended Strode School and worked for Clarks in the planning office before moving to Weston.

Dorcas met her husband Fred at the Tor Fair in Glastonbury after he asked her out using a note.

The pair later married in 1940 and were together for 32 years.

Although they never had children of their own, the married couple were close to their nieces and nephews and treated them as their own.

Stella Wall, aged 91, said her sister was a ‘real fighter’, after overcoming a number of different illnesses over the years.

She added: “She has always been there for us and always supported us. She was always a person who persevered and tried her very best.”
