Weston Lions Club has turned 50 years old and is celebrating half a century of donating hundreds of thousands of pounds to various international, national and local charities and causes.

The club was founded in 1967 and received its charter in 1968, making 2018 its 50th anniversary year.

There are more than 43,000 groups around the world and each supports its own communities as well as raising money for other Lions clubs when disaster strikes.

Weston is the largest Lions club in the area, with more than 40 members.

It is the only club in the area where membership remains limited to men only.

A club spokesman said: “Our members contribute their free time to help raise funds for local worthy causes, to provide service to those in our community who need it.

“Our members benefit from a lively social aspect of the club while they are engaged in these activities.”

The money is raised through a coconut shy, teddy bear raffles, casino and race nights, Weston Carnival and the group’s biggest fundraiser – the Real Ale Festival.

MORE: The club also celebrated 100 years of Lions International.

Go Kids Go! was launched with the Mercury in 2012 and has channelled £50,000 into promoting youth activities in the town and its surrounding villages.
