A Weston-super-Mare mum was inspired by her son's courage to swim 22 miles to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Emma Fleming, who lives in Haywood Village, swam the distance of the English Channel to raise just over £700 in total, after Whitbred, the company she works for, doubled her sponsorship.

She was inspired to help the charity after her son Kyle, aged nine, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 18 months ago.

She said: “I wanted to challenge myself to show Kyle how much I admire his courage and bravery in dealing with his condition.

“Kyle has been amazing and takes it all in his stride.”

The Swim 22 challenge was organised by Diabetes UK to raise awareness and funds to help to find a cure for the illness.

Emma said she enjoyed the challenge, which she did at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, as she realised how much she liked swimming.

“I have carried on since I really enjoyed it.”
