‘Human error’ meant just 10 people attended a meeting to revive Weston’s summer carnival. The Weston Mercury and Somerset Herald reported the story 50 years ago. Parents of a village school were upset after discovering it had dropped down the priority list to get a new school.

The Weston Mercury and Somerset Herald reported in 1968 about people who attended Winscombe Primary’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting being told they would ‘have to wait’ for a new school to be built.

The PTA announced the village will have to wait for its new primary school because the county authority’s comprehensive programme must have priority.

– A radical alteration to the layout of the side roads to the M5 at St Georges had been announced earlier in the year at a meeting of the Weston Borough Council and was met with strong objections.

The authority referred to the changes as a ‘makeshift job’ but a meeting of ministry and county officials saw the council consider changing its decision.

The council was told the original link road from the motorway to the Borough Arms Hotel had been put off because it was felt there was a better use of £1million.

The money could instead be used to improve roads which would give the greatest long-term benefits.

– A lecturer at Weston Technology College decided to leave for the Bahamas to take up a post with the Ministry of Education.

The position was planned to last three years at the Nassau Technical Centre.

– ‘Human error’ was to blame after just 10 people attended a meeting to discuss setting up a committee to organise the first summer carnival in the town for six years.

More than 300 letters were not sent out inviting businessmen and traders to the meeting, leading to the low numbers.

– Hopes to build a health care centre in Worle were debated by the borough council’s development committee.

The committee was told by E J Cottam, property manager, the Somerset Health Executive Council had written regarding the provision of surgery accommodation in Preanes Green.

Mr Cottam said it ‘became clear’ in discussion that if a health centre was established in Worle, it should be in the High Street.
