Volunteers who look after one of Weston's green spaces have received an award.

The Friends of the Prince Consort Gardens started maintaining the land overlooking Birnbeck Pier in 2012.

Its achievements include securing town green status in 2012 to protect the gardens from development and it has now been given a Watermark Award and £300 from Wessex Water.

The money will be used to turn the neglected and leaking boating pond into a home for wildlife.

Friends chairman Brian Wilkinson said: “The pond has gone through several stages and now rests as a shade of its former glory.

“As a wildlife pond it will regenerate a part of the gardens and attract younger children and families to enjoy its wildlife.

“We want the new pond to become a watery environment which increases the range of
the park’s resident wildlife.”
