A Weston-super-Mare pupil faced 'fierce competition' to take a chess title.

Golf Sookphanich, a year 10 student from Hans Price Academy, took part in the Bristol Megafinal of the Delancey UK Chess Challenge against other youngsters from around the area – winning the under 15s category.

Golf joined the chess club at the Weston academy, in Marchfields Way, last year and learned how to play and improve his technique.

He went on to join Weston Chess Club and began playing on a regular basis.

He said: “I though chess was boring before but now it is a part of my life.

“When I play chess, I feel like I am in a battle. It is like playing a shooting game on Xbox One, but better because you get to be creative.”

Learning resources manager Rachel Allchurch said: “It’s great to see the chess club progress and expand. Students who attend on a regular basis have improved so much.”
