Children at a primary school on a Weston estate will be kept safer thanks to new traffic calming measures which are being installed next month.

Parents of children at Bournville Primary School have long called for Selworthy Road to be made safer, with their pleas culminating in a petition last year to save the school’s crossing patrol when it faced being axed by North Somerset Council.

Sponsorship from an external company saw the crossing patrol reinstated in December, but now the council has confirmed a wealth of safety improvements will be made to Selworthy Road.

The work will see the road’s kerb extended at a second point along the road, meaning the carriageway will be narrowed to one lane. One area of the road is already narrowed in this way and the council will also install speed bumps at these points, so crossing the road is made easier for pedestrians.

The road will be closed for one week from February 6 to enable the work to take place.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, the council’s executive member for highways, said: “We are committed to improving the roads in North Somerset and these traffic calming measures will assist pedestrians who are accessing Bournville Primary School and the local park.”

The work will cost £9,000 to carry out.
