Weston-super-Mare's Friends of the Playhouse looking to increase membership numbers

A voluntary organisation which supports Weston's Playhouse Theatre is calling for more support and members, as it celebrates 26 years since the group's inception.
The Friends Of The Playhouse established itself as a group to support and promote the theatre and has raised more than £150,000 for equipment for the venue in High Street.
As well as raising funds, the friends also volunteer on show days by taking tickets, selling programmes and organising social events.
There are 15 members on the committee but more than 200 people attend the organisation’s regular coffee mornings.
Membership secretary Andrew Gibson told the Mercury there has been a recent influx of people interested in becoming members, but that they want to attract more – and appeal to the younger generation.
He said: “Over the past year, membership has increased.
“We do what we do because we believe the theatre is a great asset to the town and I know the theatre is also looking to get the younger generation involved, which is not easy.
“There are plans for a youth theatre and it would be great if we could have some junior members too.
“We often get schoolchildren attending our open days and they absolutely love it – there is something for everyone.
“For just a £10 membership fee, you can get discounts on a lot of shows and with the calibre of show the theatre is getting, it can only be a positive.”
Mr Gibson also said he is concerned a lot of people do not know about the organisation, despite the total fundraising of the group now sitting at £161,204. These funds have been used to purchase things such as stage curtains, sound equipment, a grand piano and a stair lift.
