The largest coffee morning ever held in Weston helped raise more than £21,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of a world record attempt at the Grand Pier on Friday.

A total of 555 people arrived at the pier to join in the Guinness world record attempt for the biggest cream tea event held at a single venue.

To beat the current world record – held by the British Consulate General in Shanghai, China – Weston needed 750 people to sit down for their cream tea at the same time.

Although the attempt ultimately fell short of the record, organisers praised the amount of money raised by the people of Weston and Tesco employees, from stores across the South West, who had been raising money throughout the week.

Tesco stores and local businesses donated hampers to a raffle which raised even more money for Macmillan.

Sara Goodchild, who organised the event, said: “I want to say the biggest thank you to everyone who supported this event in its organisation and making it happen on the day.

“Thank you to the hundreds of Tesco colleagues who raised money in the relays and everyone who came along and gave so generously at the cream tea on the pier. £20,000 is a huge amount of money which will make a difference to those needing cancer care support – well done to you all.”

Macmillan mascot Muggy had been transported around Somerset by Tesco employees from 26 stores. Muggy opened the event on Friday at 9am when he arrived on the pier in a vintage car.

Faculty, pupils and parents from Tickenham School in Clevedon were among those who made a morning trip out to support the event.

The money raised will go towards helping Macmillan offer support to patients and their families who have been diagnosed with
cancer.
