A Weston-super-Mare charity has launched an urgent appeal for new volunteers to join its ranks.

The Samaritans of Weston and North Somerset is short of ‘listeners’ – the volunteers who give their time to support those struggling to cope.

The service currently has 47 listeners on staff but require more to meet the rising demand, after the number of calls rose by more than 30 per cent last year to 14,300.

Branch director Joe said: “The recent introduction of a free-call number means the number of calls has soared.

“We are much busier than we used to be so there could be times when calls go unanswered and this is unacceptable.”

Volunteers would receive extensive training and on-going support to help offer round-the-clock support for anyone in need or someone to talk to.

An information morning will be held at the charity’s base in High Street at 10am on September 9.
