Weston woman to follow 500-year-old map on lost Inca trail

A Weston-super-Mare woman will follow a centuries-old map in search of a lost Inca trail.
Becky Condron, aged 50, will join three other women on the expedition in Llanganates Park, part of the Andes mountains, in Ecuador later this year.
They have been inspired by Isabela Brooks, one of the first women known to have travelled the length of the Amazon River, who died during the journey to the Llanganates Park in the 1920s.
The 500-year-old map they are following includes an X marking the spot of a king’s hidden treasure – but they are more interested in following the trail and learning more about that part of the world.
Becky said: “The expedition itself will be about 10 days, with about three to four weeks to acclimatise beforehand.
“It is the highest city in the world, and the altitude takes a bit of getting used to.
“People have been travelling there to find the treasure for years, and it often ended in death and disaster.
“We are not actually looking for the treasure, but following the original map and trying to find the trail route.”
While there, they may also meet a tribe explorer which Jacki Hill-Murphy – who is travelling with Becky – has visited before, and search for some rare orchids.
Becky has been training by taking part in long walks and has been learning medical and navigation skills through her work as a PA to the founder of Ice Warrior, which trains people to become explorers.
She said: “I am looking forward to spending time in a team with three women.
“We are all from different backgrounds and all middle-aged.”
Becky is hoping to raise £2,500 for her trip, and is holding some events in Clevedon as part of her fundraising.
Jacki will give a talk on travelling the length of the Amazon on June 6 at 7.30pm, and Jim McNeill will speak about polar expeditions on July 4 at 7.30pm.
Both talks will take place at the Theatre Shop in Queens Square, Clevedon. Tickets, priced £6.88, are available by searching for Liminal Vagabond Explorer Talks at www.eventbrite.com
