A group of neighbours have banded together to tidy up their community and are encouraging others to do the same.

Rita Cooksley, aged 70, moved to St Pauls Road, in Weston-super-Mare, last year and said she was appalled at the state of the lane behind her house.

She decided to take matters into her own hands and clean it up.

Mrs Cooksley began working on the area of lane directly behind her property before moving along to her neighbours’ home.

She removed the litter, lifted the gravel and removed the weeds and laid paving stones to make the lane look more attractive.

She said: “Our lane is used as a dog’s toilet and for fly-tipping. The people of St Pauls Road are going to fight back.

“The residents need to use this lane to get their bicycles out and bring their rubbish to the front of the house for collection.

“The people of Weston should all get together and clean up their lanes to make the community look nicer and to deter litterers.”
