THOUSANDS of disappointed car fans are expected in Weston over the August bank holiday weekend despite the cancellation of a popular motoring event. The Weston Wheels modified car show drew 20,000 people to the old airfield last year from all over the country. But this year organisers announced the event has been scrapped for good. However, police are still planning more patrols in the area to cope with an expected influx of young drivers to the resort.A spokesman said: "We will have sufficient patrols on the bank holiday weekend to deter any car cruisers."Organisers of Weston Wheels announced on their website that the event has been cancelled due to rising costs. The statement read: "We are sad to announce the Weston Wheels event will not be taking place again."Since the 2005 event, which saw our biggest attendance ever, we have been working on the 2006 event. "However, due to the new licensing laws which came into force over the past year and the extra requirements which would be required by the local authorities to solve many of the problems seen in 2005 it has become unviable for us to continue the event in its present format."Previously, North Somerset Council helped with publicity work and offered health and safety advice.A spokesman said: "We are sad to see that the event is not going to happen this year. Most people stayed on the site so we don't believe it will have a great impact on tourism figures." The car festival was set up six years ago to try to stop illegal cruisers from taking over the town and causing problems for police and residents. "The event, which was billed as 'not just a show but a way of life', boasted dance acts, music, show cars, a fun fair and a trade fair.
