THE Women's Institute in Wedmore fears people will start fouling in the streets if the village's public toilets are not saved from closure. The toilets in The Borough had been earmarked for closure as part of a massive district-wide council cost-cutting programme. But Sedgemoor agreed to open negotiations with Wedmore Parish Council to take over the running of the facilities.Wedmore's Women's Institute has written to Sedgemoor District Council about the need of keeping public toilets open in the village.Institute secretary Margaret Tinney said: "We're worried about people fouling on the streets as it's inevitable without public toilets in the village."A lot of members and the village as a whole are very angry about the possible loss. It will have an enormous effect on the number of visitors that come to Wedmore as a lot of people use that facility."Sedgemoor has given the parish council an estimate annual cost of £5,400 to run the toilets and £42,000 for refurbishment workJohn Sanderson, chairman of Wedmore Parish Council, said negotiations had started with Sedgemoor, but the council would need funding to take over the running of the toilets. He said: "Wedmore needs these facilities and what are people supposed to do who are in desperate need of the toilet without them?"If the district council gave us the budget then we would consider taking over the running of them."A report will be presented to the district council in October to see which parish councils have agreed to take over the toilets for May 2007.
