SOLOISTS from the major British opera companies will join forces to perform a Viennese Strauss Gala at The Playhouse, Weston. Recreating the nostalgia and romance of the Viennese festive season, the February 15 show introduces the audience to a bygone age of glamorous soirees and Strauss waltzes and comprises highlights from some of the great operettas of Strauss, Kalman and Lehar, including Die Fleidermaus, The Merry Widow and many more.Sparkling British soprano Anthea Kempston will perform alongside three exceptional artistes in beautiful costumes of the period. Having trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Anthea has sung with the BBC Philharmonic, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Northern Chamber Orchestra.Joining Anthea is British tenor Francis Church. Francis trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, winning the Verdi Prize at the National Mozart Competition and Scottish Opera's John Noble Competition.Performing alongside Anthea and Francis are two successful Bulgarian Opera singers, soprano Lyuba Nakova Trayanova, and tenor Iliyan Nedev.These talented lead singers are complimented by The European Orchestral Ensemble, supervised by musical director Matthew Freeman. Matthew enjoys an extensive career as an arranger, conductor and pianist. Most recently he has arranged and conducted a rock classic album for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and arranged music for the film Gladiator. The performance starts at 7.30pm.
