SIXTEEN years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of Hairspray to life. The film, now showing at the Odeon, Weston, features new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show. The comedy tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, (Nikki Blonsky), an overweight teenager with all the right moves, who is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. Every day after school, she and her best friend Penny (Amanda Bynes) run home to watch the show and drool over the hot Link Larkin (Zac Efron), much to Tracy's mother Edna's (John Travolta) dismay. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins (Jason Marsden) holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the show. With all of the help of her friend Seaweed (Elijah Kelly), Tracy makes it on the show, but when scheming evil dance queen Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her mother Velma (Michelle Pfieffer) plot to destroy Tracy it turns into chaos.* The Weston & Somerset Mercury has teamed up with the Odeon to offer two lucky readers the chance to each win a pair of tickets to see a film of their choice, subject to availability. To enter, please answer the following question: What year was the original Hairspray film released? * Closes: 10am on July 26. * Usual Archant rules apply and the editor's decision is final.
