ACTOR Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton join forces in a big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd (18).Depp stars in the title role as a man who is unjustly sent to prison. He vows revenge not only for his injustice but for the devastating consequences to his wife and daughter. When he returns after escaping 15 years' false imprisonment in Australia to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He welcomes gentlemen for his services but they are never heard of again.Helena Bonham Carter stars as Mrs Lovett, Sweeney's accomplice who has a passion for making meat pies with a very unusual flavour. The cast also includes Alan Rickman who portrays the evil edged Judge Turpin who sends Sweeney to prison and Timothy Spall as the judge's wicked associate. Sacha Baron Cohen plays rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli. The story is told through song and every cast member uses his or her own voice. Apart from Laura Michelle Kelly, who plays the beggar woman, not one member of the cast was a professional singer. As Sondheim has written one of the most complicated scores in the history of musical theatre, this is a huge accomplishment.* The Weston & Somerset Mercury has teamed up with the Odeon, Weston, to offer two lucky readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to see a film of their choice, subject to availability. To enter please answer the following question: What dish does Sweeney's accomplice, Mrs Lovett, have a passion for making? * Closes: 9am on February 1.* Usual Archant rules apply and the editor's decision is final. Please check the availability with Weston Odeon box office before arrival with your winning tickets.
