DOZENS of witnesses have come forward to help police investigate an accident outside a Worle school which has 'rocked' the community.A five-year-old girl and a boy, aged nine, were crossing New Bristol Road outside Worle Community School when they were in collision with a red Vauxhall Cavalier car.The girl, a pupil at Mendip Green First School, was taken to Frenchay Hospital with serious head injuries and transferred to Bristol Children's Hospital where she is improving. Doctors say she is in a 'satisfactory' condition. The boy, a pupil at St Martin's Junior School, went to Weston General Hospital with leg injuries but is now back at school.Teachers and parents at Worle and Mendip Green schools have been 'shocked' by the accident and headteachers of both schools have expressed their sadness.Mendip Green First School headteacher Bruce Dale said: "We are tremendously upset that this has happened. It has particularly upset the reception teachers where the little girl was a pupil."It immediately hits the year group she was in and it has really rocked the parents and teachers as well."I want to go up and visit her when she is a bit better and will write to parents about the incident when the police have got further on with their investigation."Headteacher at Worle Community School, Trevor Bailey, has written to parents asking them to take more responsibility when parking.Mr Bailey said: "We express our heartfelt sympathy for the poor little children involved."It was a terrible scene with the little girl lying on the side of the road and other shocked and upset children being looked after inside the school grounds."I have written to parents reminding them of their responsibility to other peoples' children. We do get people parking on the cycle lanes, which is dangerous. When I have been on duty outside the gates I tell parents not to park there but it is about awareness and people need constantly reminding."Police are compiling witness statements and the driver of the vehicle involved is helping them with their investigation.Officers plan to speak to the injured girl when doctors say she is well enough.New Bristol Road was closed for more than four hours after the incident at 3.50pm on June 30.Anyone who has information is asked to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
