THE death of a woman after a fall in a care home was accidental, a coroner has ruled.

Ruth Coombes, aged 88, of Heathwood Care Home in Trewartha Park, Weston, fell and was taken to Weston General Hospital on January 24, where she died and was found to have suffered haemorrhaging.

Flax Bourton Coroners Court heard on June 20 how Mrs Coombes had a history of falls at her home and at different care homes, as well as Alzheimer’s and short-term memory problems. A pathologist report read out at the inquest said she had suffered a subdural haematoma in her brain.

A statement from the family heard at the court outlined that Mrs Coombes’ relatives did not blame the home for her death and were thankful to staff for its standard of care.

Assistant Deputy Coroner Dr Peter Harrowing said: “The haematoma did not cause the fall, therefore I give a verdict of accidental death.”
