EXTRA time will be required to install the Silica because builders do not want to work during the World Cup.Contractors were due to get cracking on Weston's newest piece of public art at Big Lamp Corner this weekend. But plans have been set back by weeks because contractors from outside the area want to stay near to home for forthcoming England games. The work can only be done on Sunday mornings to minimise risks to the public and limit disruption. The 10m steel and concrete base of Silica, dubbed a 'carrot' by its critics, was meant to be installed last Sunday, but the massive T4 beach party scuppered the timetable. Potential England games on the following two Sundays mean the work is now due to happen on July 9. The project should be finished by the end of July.Project manager Mark Luck said: "I've asked around and people don't seem to be over critical about doing it later. People are quite excited about the project."French crepes, Belgian waffles and Italian paninis and even buckets and spades will go on sale from a tiny shop at the heart of Silica.Businessman Steve Berry is planning to run fast food outlet Berry's World of Flavours from a confined space at the base of the towering sculpture. Other tasty treats will include American muffins and Japanese sushi.Mr Berry is set to sign a three-year contract for the concession with North Somerset Council in the next couple of weeks. Despite cramped conditions, the micro-shop will be stuffed with two fridges, a freezer, basins, a microwave, crepe maker, waffle iron and panini griddle. There will even be a second floor stock room accessed by ladder.Asked how he came up with the shop's name, Mr Berry, who runs two Berry's News and Food stores, said: "Crepes are going to be our main trade, but you have to be careful using the word crepe in the title. One idea that didn't work was 'have a crepe on us', but we settled for 'world of flavours'."We intend to sell postcards and a very limited number of seaside goods as well while in season."The concession will be something different and I've felt positive about it for some time."Mr Berry has been asked by the council not to hang seaside goods from Silica. He intends to run the concession from 9am-7pm, seven days a week.
