FOOTBALL mad teenagers will have a chance to take part in their own World Cup thanks to a new competition. With the World Cup finals in Germany just two months away, a competition is being launched for youngsters across North Somerset. North Somerset Youth Service has teamed up with Avon and Somerset Police and the Weston & Somerset Mercury its sister paper the North Somerset Times to organise the event on May 31.The competition will see up to 32 teams battle it out for a special trophy.Medals, sponsored by Avon and Somerset Police, will be handed out to all the competitors, with one lucky team walking away with the cup sponsored by the Weston & Somerset Mercury and the North Somerset Times.North Somerset Youth Service spokesman Alan Rowe said: "The idea of the tournament is that it is a friendly event and getting involved is far more important than winning."It will also promote the World Cup and also encourage young people to get involved in sport."Each team, which has to have a minimum of two girl and two boy players, will be given a country playing in the World Cup to represent on the pitch.Teams must be of six people, with up to 10 players so substitutions can be made. They will be asked play in costumes representing one of the countries in the World Cup.Players from Weston, Yatton and Clevedon youth groups have already signed up to the competition at Portishead Lake Grounds. But teams are welcome from schools and all other types of young people's organisations.Mr Rowe added: "We are also hoping to organise some training sessions in the run-up to the tournament and some local celebrity players to give our World Cup entrants some coaching and advice."Referees and linesmen are also needed to help with the tournament.Anyone who wants to register a team needs to contact Alan Rowe at Portishead Youth Centre on 01275 842461.
