World Mental Health Day marked with dance across Weston-super-Mare's Marine Lake

People marked World Mental Health Day on Monday by taking part in a contemporary dance showcase across Weston's Marine Lake bridge.
The Cross That Bridge event was organised by the Mean Feet dance company, alongside the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP), which runs the Long Fox inpatient psychiatric unit at Weston General Hospital.
The performance invited people to dance in order to remove some of the stigma surrounding mental health conditions, while encouraging people to speak up if they are experiencing a mental health problem.
AWP’s involvement coordinator Stephen Budd said the location was particularly poignant, as the Long Fox unit is named after Dr Edward Long Fox, who bought Knightstone Island as a therapeutic mental health treatment venue in 1830.
Stephen said: “The difference between 1830 and 2016 is 186 years – but here we are, hand-in-hand as members of AWP, making a contribution to mental wellbeing.
“It was an opportunity to promote World Mental Health Day with a visual, public activity, which helps break down the stigma which exists around mental health and reaching out for help.”
