World Tai Chi Day celebrated in Weston

More than 100 people took to Weston-super-Mare’s Italian Gardens at the weekend to show off their martial arts skills.
World Tai Chi Day was marked in the gardens on Saturday, as tai chi players across the globe headed to the streets to practise the centuries-old pastime.
The event was organised by charity Age UK Somerset in a bid to encourage Weston’s older residents to become more active.
Age UK also hoped the event would introduce people to tai chi instructors and lead them to take classes in the Chinese martial art.
Tai chi is largely taught for its health benefits, but some players learn the skills for self defence.
It centres on the concept of yin and yang in ancient Chinese philosophy, which theorises opposite and contrary forces may be complementary and interconnected.
