The centenary of the end of World War One will be marked by the installation of a statue, which will raise money for charity, at Weston Town Hall.

North Somerset Council will buy a pair of soldier silhouette statues from forces charity Remembered to honour those who fell in the war.

The charity has launched its There But Not There campaign, which hopes to see the sacrifices of fallen soldiers honoured.

One silhouette will be installed at the Town Hall, in Walliscote Road, with a second to be placed at Castlewood in Clevedon, costing £750 each.

They are also likely to be taken on a tour of North Somerset.

The 100th anniversary of the end of the war will be marked on Armistice Day – November 11 – and the council believes the statues will add to the occasion.

A decision notice due to be signed by the council’s armed forces champion Peter Bryant said: “The two silhouettes will add to the commemorative activities taking place across North Somerset where there are strong forces links.”
