A WORLE golfer ditched his clubs in favour of a paintbrush when he was commissioned to create artwork for a world-famous artist.
David Gregory, aged 24, is a touring professional golfer who has been playing the sport since the age of seven.
But he is a man of many talents and is a dab hand with a pencil as well as a putter.
David studied art at school and one of his friends remembered his talent, so asked him to create some artwork.
After sketching an image of Mohammed Ali, David shared it on social media where it sparked a flood of interest.
David said: “Everyone loved it on Facebook and Twitter, it got shared so many times.
“A girl put something on Facebook about wanting to find a Weston artist and was told to get in touch with me.
“She told me to do a picture of three children for her boyfriend’s Christmas present and just told me his name was Damien.
“I asked what his second name was in case I knew him and she said Hirst, and I said ‘not the Damien Hirst?’
“I didn’t know why she would want me to do a picture for Damien Hirst.
“I was quite sceptical at first but I looked into it and realised she was actually Damien Hirst’s girlfriend.”
After three days of careful planning, drawing and painting, David completed the piece.
In the background, he created a composition using inspiration from Damien’s other works, such as the iconic spot and butterfly paintings.
The unique Christmas present was then couriered from David’s home in Rossendale Close to London before being shipped to Thailand for the Hirst family’s festive celebrations.
David said: “She could have commissioned any one of his friends to do it but she wanted something a bit different.
“Damien said he really loved it, no-one has drawn his kids so he just welled up when he got it.
“They were really cool about it, he’s posted some pictures on Instagram and thanked me. I would definitely do it again.”
