Thousands of pounds have been made available by a Worle organisation to help individuals and groups who are making a big difference in their community.

Worle Lions Club is inviting applications for a share of its £3,000 pot.

The new scheme, called Give It A Worle, will provide money to individuals, organisations or projects which need a little financial help.

The projects must benefit people living in Worle, and the money should ideally be used to buy something physical rather than to cover running costs.

The club’s community services director Margaret Simpson said: “Worle Lions will be seeking applications to find the very best of local projects where our help will make that huge and significant difference.

“We always give quite a bit of money away during the year but this time we are asking people to come to us.

“They can be individuals, or groups, and they can be organisations we have already helped.”

The Lions club regularly gives money to sport groups for items such as football kits and training equipment, and has also supported the Freewheelers emergency motorbike service which transports blood and breast milk.

Most of the money in the Give It A Worle pot came from the family fun day held last summer, which has been running annually since 2001.

The club has a varied calendar, as it hosts a Christmas meal for pensioners every year, and donates wash packs to Weston Foodbank and homeless charity Somewhere To Go.

The group also donates used glasses to be sent to eye clinics in Africa, and members assist at a partially-sighted bowls tournament every year.

Worle Lions Club, which has been running for 19 years, is holding a social evening with skittles on April 21, to give people the chance to learn more about the group’s activities and sign up as a member.

It will take place at the Lamb Inn, in High Street, Worle, at 7pm.

Only emailed applications for the Give It A Worle fund will be accepted.

People can email worlelions@gmail.com for an application form and the applications will be reviewed on June 30.
