A petition has been handed to the council’s executive members in a bid to save Worle library from closure.

North Somerset Council is considering a series of options for the building, including closing it completely, as it tries to save £500,000.

Other options include merging with the children’s centre or renovating the building to create room for other services in the building.

It is also likely there will be job losses, as staff wages are the council’s biggest expense.

Worle resident Raye Green presented the 1,000-strong petition and spoke to executive members at their most recent meeting, and said: “I have been a member of Worle library since it opened in 1969. It provides the elderly in the village, young families, its schools and its students, with facilities which are greatly valued by the people.

“Worle only has one public building which is people-friendly and that’s our library. We need to keep our library and find better, more imaginative ways of using the space.”

Executive member for community services Felicity Baker thanked Ms Green for the petition, but said merging services is an inevitable step to ‘maintain good quality services at a price we can afford’.

The executive members voted to carry out a three-month public consultation on the plans.
