HUNDREDS of pounds of damage was inflicted on a medieval Somerset town square when a group of drunken youths rampaged through it.Cars were scratched, windows smashed and a string of planters designed to brighten up Axbridge Town Square were smashed to pieces when the yobs descended on the town in the middle of the night.Police believe the problems began when a private house party on the edge of the town got out of hand when a group of between 40-50 people gate-crashed it.Horrified locals woke up to find the trail of destruction from the southern end of Axbridge, along Moorland Street leading into the Square.Officers at Cheddar Police Station are now appealing for witnesses to try to find the culprits.PC Stuart Bullet, whose beat includes Axbridge, said: "The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning."It started at a party near the town being held by a group of teenagers. To begin with everything was fine at the party and it was nicely organised by the teenagers."But they didn't count on the 40 or so gate-crashers turning up and ruining the party. The gate-crashers were a bit older than the partygoers."The were all drunk, or had been taking some other substances, and eventually left the party and rampaged up Moorland Street."They were scratching cars, smashing things and chucking a load of new planters around The Square, causing all sorts of trouble."We are short of witnesses and if anyone saw anything they can contact me at the station on 01934 623288.
