Rain continued to fall on the second day of the Weston Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament.

RAIN continued to bedevil the Weston Ladies’ Open Bowls Tournament, sponsored by Optika, on its second day, Monday.

With two competitors from Bath pulling out, the singles competition had to be redrawn, but there was some excellent bowls despite rain which fell through the six rounds of group matches. Games were decided by the first player to reach 15 shots.

Clevedon’s Johns Trophy player Lynn Palmer, who had forgotten to enter but came in as first reserve was particularly impressive in Section A, winning all her matches by comfortable margins to reach Friday’s quarter-finals.

In the same section, Ashcombe’s Joan McInally also had a 100 per cent record, while Ann Fewings (Wessex Ladies) and reigning mixed pairs champion Pat Bax also went through, despite both having lost once.

Maureen Edwards (Thornfield, Rugby), singles champion for the last two years, won all her matches in Section B, including beating Clevedon Prom’s redoubtable Margaret Dyer, who has been playing in the tournament for 40 years.

Consolation for Dyer was that she reached the last eight. Two 100 per centers in Section B were Joan Butler, from Worcester’s Barbourne club and local Ros Cleeves (Victoria), a member of the team who had won the Sunday Triples the previous day.
