Winscombe girls won their first sevens tournament of the year, held at Bicton College in Devon.

WINSCOMBE Warriors Under-15 girls travelled to Bicton College to compete in the first sevens tournament of the year, which they won.

The girls were eager to get the tournament of to a winning start against Newquay and Ellie Darby ran the length of the pitch to score the first points, followed by two more for her hat-trick, while Lucy Burgess slotted over one conversion.

After the break, Newquay scored a couple of unconverted tries, before Burgess scored an excellent try after good work in the loose from Rosie Walker, to make the final score 22-10.

Next to face the imposing Warriors were Castle Cary, but this was a very one-sided affair with tries from Darby (2), Hattie Stephens, Amy Godwin, Charlotte Hayley-Wright, Burgess and a first try of the season for Walker. Burgess added six conversions for a 52-0 victory.

The Warriors next faced previous unbeaten Liskard, with only one try in the first-half by Darby. The coaching team of Paul Burgess and Tony Hayley made some tactical changes as the Warriors scored four converted tries in the second period through Godwin, Darby, Burgess and Cooksey, Burgess converting them all.

Somerton were next to feel the force of the Warriors as they were beaten 24-0 with tries for Darby (2), Stephens and Godwin.

The semi-final pitted the Warriors against Liskard again. Darby opened the scoring with two tries, one converted by Burgess. Further tries were scored by Wilkinson, Godwin and Burgess (2), as Winscombe won 29-0.

The final against Queen Bees from Cornwall, saw the Warriors having to stubbornly defending their line with great defence from Johnson in particular. A big tackle from captain Stephens dislodged the ball, enabling Wilkinson to unleash Darby to sprint clear and score.

After the break, there were further tries for Darby, Hayley-Wright and Godwin, Burgess converted two for a 22-0 lead before the Bees scored a try in the closing seconds.

With the first piece of silverware now in the Winscombe cupboard, the attention is now on the Super 6 competition at Worcester next month, where the best six Under-15 teams in the country meet for the first time in a winner takes all competition.
