A weakened Burnham side travelled to Bath and came away with a defeat.

Avon 36 pts

Burnham 26 pts

BURNHAM travelled to the outskirts of Bath and were forced to make many changes and for the first 35 minutes it showed as they found themselves losing 24-0.

Just before half-time, Burnham were awarded a penalty, quickly taken by Richard Manley, which was finished off by Alan Weller.

From the restart, Burnham scored again through Jordan Paul, converted by Tim Piper to make it 24-12. Avon reverted to their pack power and were granted a penalty try.

This set Burnham back on their heels, allowing Avon to dominate three phases before releasing their No 8 to brush aside Burnham’s defence and score.

However, this seemed to galvanise Burnham and after a long kick from Avon, Jordan Paul set off from his own 22 and combined with determined running from Weller and Babbington, the ball was whipped back inside for Paul to record his second try, converted by Piper converted.

Shortly after, Burnham broke out from their own goal line. Weller offloaded to a charging Tom Chaffey, who almost made the try line, but passed for Jack Pope, making his debut, to scoop the ball up and ground the ball under the posts for Piper to add the extras.

Man of the match was awarded to Jordan Paul. After the match, head coach Graham Buller said that he was frustrated at their consistency, mainly due to the many changes.

On Saturday, Burnham are home to Barton Hill, kick-off 3pm.

THE seconds entertained relegated side Wells at the BASC and registered a narrow victory.

Burnham lost Will Astil to injury, but he had contributed an enormous amount to the attack, linking superbly with Matt Mitchell and Will Conway.

It was Burnham who had the last call with a late rally into the home side’s half, which saw the game come to a close.
