Weston Colts started the new season with a narrow victory at North Petherton.

WESTON Colts opened their league campaign with a hard fought 26-20 win against North Petherton.

Weston opened the scoring through Jack Salisbury, converted by Harry Flower. Their next visit to Petherton’s 22 resulted in their second try when skipper Jake Grimes crashed over following more good work by the pack. Soon after, Petherton replied with a penalty kick.

Weston then suffered a double set back when Loz Armstrong was carried off and the side conceded a soft try shortly after. Great work in the loose created space and man of the match Tom Sugg was on hand to race clear. Flower added the conversion and at half time Weston led 8-19.

In the second half, Sugg broke away for his second try, converted by Flower and victory looked secure.

Petherton came back superbly to keep up the pressure and in the last five minutes, scored two tries, one converted as Weston held out to earn a bonus point win.

The pack looked good in parts with Rob Tollan, Jack Wilcox and Jacob Cox impressing. In the backs, Weston looked strong with Mitch Salisbury, Jamie Smith and Harry Flower standing out.

HORNETS Under-16s travelled to Devon to take on Crediton and came away with a 10-try victory.

Good work by Taylor, Holyday and Bate, set up the first try for Chamberlain, converted by Humphris.

Fitzpatrick, Cocking and Hancock were putting their opposite numbers under pressure in the scrum and Eades and Parkman constantly stole ground with surging runs. Eades’ forray into Crediton territory allowed the back line again to pounce and this time, Constable rounded his man to score, converted by Humphris.

Further tries by Taylor (2), Bate and Constable (2) gave Hornets a commanding lead at half-time.

After the break, a fine drive saw Francis, Richardson, Dover and the pack re-cycling the ball against a flagging defence. Crediton held on, but were unable to stop Holyday crashing through for a superb team try.

Good work by Bate and Coe set up Constable for a score, converted by Keano. A defensive tackle by Mohide and Foroughi and the spilt ball was scooped up and Chamberlain was too quick for the defence, converted by Keano to make the final score 64-0.
