Worlebury Golf Club reached the final of the Somerset Bowl, led by a commanding performance by captain Mick Keen.

THE highlight of the week at Worlebury Golf Club was Mick Keen’s team’s commanding performance to beat Clevedon 4-1 and reach the Somerset Bowl final.

Vital halves were gained by the pairings of Kevin Pearson and Mark Otterburn and Martyn Chambers and Lewys Charles. Fine wins were recorded by captain Keen and Terry Bradley, juniors, Jack Partridge and Matt Blackman and Simon Dempsey and Josh Freeman.

Worlebury await the winners of the match between Isle of Wedmore and Oake Manor and will go into the final in a confident mood.

Also of great importance was the seniors’ open which attracted a large field of 72 pairs, who were complimentary of the condition of the course.

Clevedon pairing, M Denham and M Thomas took the honours with 45 points. D Blissett and D Hinton of Vivary Park took second on countback from local pair, John Sokol and David Murrant, both scoring 43 points.

The next three teams each had 42 points, with Clevedon visitors, D Sutton and P Horlock inching out the local pairings of Malcolm Summers and Frank Hopkinson and Martin Ford and Clive Rides.

Keri Allchurch joint top scored at the individual event during pro weekend, his 45 points giving him a narrow win in the first division. Lewys Charles and Alan Hartree tied on 43 points with the former taking second place on countback.

Steve Rowlands won the second division with 42 points pipping Nathan Talbot, who took runners-up on countback from Barry Stone, both scoring 41.

In the third division, Lee O’Dea also recorded 45 points with Dave Brown second with 43 and Adrian Marshman third with 39.

The pairs event also produced some high scores with Danny Marshall and Simon Gilpin comfortably winning with an amazing 53 points. It was a three-horse race for the runners-up spot with countback need to separate the field.

Jack Butterfield and Rob Furlong, pipped the pairings of Steve Gray and Stuart Lock and Terry Bradley and Billy Coles, each scoring 47 points. First team captain, Harry Rowlands and partner Will Denyer, whose round included a hole-in-one, came fifth with 46 points.

Nine of the club’s lowest handicapped players competed in the Fallon Salver, a scratch last man standing competition. In front of a modest crowd and with some friendly banter, the players were whittled down one by one either by highest score or a chip off at each hole.

The final pair standing on the 18th tee were Matt Blackman and Joe Dale, the latter finally running out as the winner. Accepting the Salver and prize, Joe thanked the Fallon family for their sponsorship and Denis Thompson for refereeing, adding that he looked forward to defending his title next year.

The first team put on a brave performance, but lost narrowly 3-2, to a strong Cumberwell Park team and the relegation fight continues.

The mixed greensomes competition for the Stella Hammond Salver was won by Angela Bagley and Tony Westren with 46 points. Runners-up were Keri Allchurch and Lisa Griffiths on countback.

The final five competitors in the Fallon Salver on the 17th tee.

EIGHT pairs from Weston defended their title against Worlebury in the annual Westbury Challenge.

The mixed greensomes match was played at Worlebury on another warm day, but with a cool breeze making it an enjoyable round for all. Weston retained the shield by winning 5-3.

The Weston junior open had a field of 25 young players competing on a sunny day with a testing stiff breeze. The Somerset team prize went to Saltford A, who qualify for the national championships, just beating the Weston boys by two points.

Dennis Longdon, Somerset County secretary, presented Toby Booth with the Long Hop Trophy for the best Weston player.

The ladies national Help the Heroes Stableford was played with some good scoring and close results for the top five.

Joan Jenkinson finished in first place (39), followed closely by Reine O’Reilly (38), Terri Blackhurst (37), Alison Whitewood (37) and Kath Farrant (36). The ladies hope to qualify for the semi-final round and repeat their success of 2013 when they played in the final at Turnberry.

The ladies B team lost away to a strong Wedmore side, but achieved four valuable points, keeping them top of their division in the Alliance League.

A successful senior captain’s day raised £550 for the charity Food Bank and players donated food items totalling 93 kilos in weight. Senior captain Brian Whiddett thanked everyone for their generous donations and for an enjoyable day.

Good scores were recorded on Saturday for the men’s Pentagon Trophy. In first place with 65 nett (countback) was Tim Rees, followed closely by Joe Neary (65) and in third place, Martin Preddy (66).

Worlebury ladies captain Marnie Sweet, captain Paul Gardiner, Weston captain Roy Schubert and ladies vice-captain Julie Ward.

WITH the heat making play sticky later in the day, it was ideal timing for the 6am shotgun start for the annual triangular match for the Wiltshere Trophy between the men’s, ladies’ and senior sections’ at Wedmore.

After a slightly delayed start while the pass code to the course gates was sorted out, play got under way in ideal conditions. The competition is played as 18 individual matches, with one player from each section in each match with the highest Stableford scorer in each group receiving three points for his side, and so on down to third.

There were some good scores with one player from each section, Gina Falcon for the ladies, Mike Garbutt for the men and Ray Dodkin for the seniors scoring 43 points.

The overall result was fairly close, although for once the seniors’ finished a disappointing third, amassing just 32½ points. The ladies fared better and their total of 37 only just fell short of the men, who claimed the trophy yet again with 38½ points. The match finished in the traditional way with all 54 players enjoying breakfast and bucks fizz back in the clubhouse.

Earlier in the week, the ladies had held their qualifier for the Daily Mail foursomes. There were some creditable performances and ladies’ captain Ange Webber and Ronnie Follenfant scored 33 points, which was beaten by one point by Diane Miller and Janis Lawrence.

Best score of the day though came from Aileen Robertson and Audrey Cowlin, who claimed first place with 35 points.

BURNHAM & Berrow Golf Club members turned out in force to support club captain Neil Darby on his captains’ day.

Andy Fisher, Matt Houghton and John Nuttall swept to victory with 92 points in the best two Stableford scores to count from three format winning by a massive six-point margin.

Four handicapper Matt Houghton played a major part in the teams’ massive score by covering the difficult links course in just 68 shots, which included four birdies and an eagle at the fourth.

This was almost matched by fellow team member Andy Fisher, who also plays off a four handicap, who made three birdies and an eagle at the 13th.

Second place went to Brett-Halling Brown, Bryn Jones and Steve O’Connell, who beat Steve Cartwright, Stuart Cook and David Lloyd into third place on a countback, after they had tied with 86 points.

The best score by a ladies’ team went to Mel Bell, Annette Poynton and Alice Robinson with 78 points.

Following the conclusion of play, newly-appointed club professional David Haines entertained the members with his golf trick shot show.

Entertainment carried on into the evening in the clubhouse with a singer and charity auction which raised further funds for charity (Help the Child), which now stands at more than £14,000.
