The Cases Somerset Rebels got their season underway with a victory at Plymouth.

THE Cases Somerset Rebels endured a soggy start to the 2014 speedway season when their opening fixture of the campaign, the first leg of their Air-Fence Challenge match against West Country rivals, Plymouth Devils, was called off due to a waterlogged track.

Heavy overnight rain, coupled with further heavy and prolonged showers on the morning of the match left the track under water, and with the threat of further rain later in the evening, the Somerset promotion made an early decision to call off the match.

The Rebels opened their account on the road, when they won the first leg of the Air Fence Challenge match, recording a resounding 36-57 win at Plymouth Devils.

The Rebels were on the front foot throughout, with Nick Morris (10+2), Todd Kurtz (12+2), Brady Kurtz (10), Paul Starke (8+1) and Pontus Aspgren (7+2) all scoring well.

The Rebels have an early opportunity to add to the three championship trophies when they meet the Newcastle Diamonds for the Premier Shield.

The first leg of which is at the Oaktree Arena tomorrow night (Fri) with the second leg at the Newcastle Stadium on Sunday.

The Premier Shield is traditionally contested between the previous season’s League Champions and the side which won the KO Cup, but with Somerset having done the double in 2013, Newcastle, last season’s League Cup winners, will provide the opposition.
