Harry takes over as junior captain at Weston

WESTON Golf Club junior section held their AGM following a lunch, generously supplied by Jenny Carter.

Jenny has been a great supporter of the section for many years giving encouragement to young players, but ill health prevented her from attending the meeting.

Team organiser, Roy Turner, reported a successful year narrowly missing promotion to top of the league by half a point.

Trophies were presented to the juniors and retiring captain Sam Fearnley thanked everyone for their support and wished new captain, Harry Turner every success in 2014.

Chairman Trevor Ward thanked all the committee, particularly retiring secretary Anne Meakin for her hard work and welcomed the new secretary Alysia Rees. Sue Radcliffe returns this year as chairperson and is looking forward to encouraging new members to join the section.

The club midweek roll-up was played under blue skies bringing in an amazing score of 27 points on the back nine for Hong Chow. Steve Burrough came second and Keiron Aplin followed in third.

As well as the weekly competition, there are almost daily roll-ups for the seniors. The runaway winners in the latest 6-6-6 competition were Steve Strange, Robin Webb and Nigel Jillings on 66 points. The next three teams all scored 59 and could only be separated on countback.

Tuesdays have become a social occasion for the ladies. Making the best of inclement weather, they played a nine-hole competition followed by lunch. Beryl Robert won with 13 points and the winner on Saturday was Alysia Rees with 19 points.

ADRIAN Deakins won the Burnham & Berrow Golf Club Stableford last Saturday. Adrian, who plays off one handicap and is captain-elect, made the most of the more favourable weather conditions in the morning, racing to the turn in a gross two under par 34 for 21 points.

Turning into the back nine with the wind picking up all the time, conditions deteriorated and scoring became extremely difficult. Finishing with 34 points, Adrian managed to push two juniors - Charlie Huggins (junior captain and five handicap), and Miles Richardson (nine handicap) into second and third places respectively.

John Nuttall who won the January medal two weeks ago was in form once again taking victory in Division 2 with 30 points, highlighting just how difficult the weather conditions became.

The weather did not provide any difficulty for 17-year-old junior member Lewis Norton-Collins as he scored his first ever hole-in one-from 155 yards at the par three ninth hole with an eight iron.

The final of the Charles Parry Foursomes Knockout was played in better weather conditions, with Peter Gilraine and Adrian Beaumont claiming victory with a 6&5 win over Frank Ryan and Alex Kidd.

WITH the seniors’ competition falling foul of the wet weather for once, it was just the ladies who had the best of conditions at Wedmore.

They played a greensome over 15 holes to avoid the worst of the slippery fairways on the back nine. Despite a blustery wind there were some good scores with many just about playing to handicap.

Third place went to Jane Hewitt and Diane Miller with 27 points. This was just one point behind the runners-up, Alison Dodkin and Sue Hughes. The only pair to complete the course under their handicaps were Caroline Patterson and Eunice Bond with a total of 31.

SIMON Baunton was the victor of the February monthly Stableford at Brean.

He was the only player in the field to beat his handicap as he returned a best of the day 38 points and took the Division 3 award. The other two divisions were won with 36 points apiece as the inclement weather put paid to any low scoring happening.

Phil Hodgson was the winner of Division 1 ending one point ahead of Roger Vaughan. Division 2 was taken with 36 points by Neil Barker, as he enjoyed a two-point winning margin over Chris Fairchild.

Both of Brean’s professionals featured in the top of the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal last week at Weston. Head pro Andrew March ended in a tie for fifth spot after matching the reduced par of 62 over the 16 holes that were open.

He did however, rue a double bogey six at the final hole which dropped him down three spots on the leaderboard. Director of golf David Haines produced one of his better performances around a course he rarely seems to score well around.

He ended up with a 63 and a share of eighth spot as he strengthened his position in fourth place of the Total Triumph Order of Merit. March moved back into 10th position in the table with his result at the midway point of their Winter PGA season.
