Winscombe stretched their winning run to six matches after beating Clevedon.

Winscombe 20 pts

Clevedon 3rd XV 14 pts

WINSCOMBE took their winning streak to six against Clevedon, helped by the fact that Clevedon’s 15th man did not turn up until half-time.

Winscombe took the lead after 10 minutes with a Matt Hoy-Green penalty after good work by Tom Ware, but Clevedon hit back with a converted try to take the lead.

Five minutes from half-time, a number of phases took play into the visitors’ 22 and put their line under pressure, resulting in some space out wide for quick hands by James Carter, Hoy-Green and Jack Milton to send Cameron Lapes over in the corner for a one-point lead.

In the second half, Paul Cashman, who completed his first full game since returning to the fray, made a number of powerful runs and put in some big hits. It was from his 20-metre drive off a ruck that an attack developed.

Further drives from Andy Tams and Ware enabled Matt Dodds to draw a defender and pop the ball to Paul Mitchell, who ran over the defending winger for a try out wide.

From another solid scrummage near the visitors’ line against a much larger pack, the ball was fed to Hoy-Green who managed to wriggle over for the third try, which he also converted.

Unfortunately, a lack of concentration and fitness allowed Clevedon to run in a converted try from long distance to finish proceedings and gain a losing bonus point.

Kieran Gibson, having his first senior game, played well and his youthfulness enabled him to glide over the muddy pitch.
