Members from Clarence Bowling Club travelled to Coventry to receive their 2012 Club of the Year award.

WESTON-based Clarence Bowling Club were presented with the 2012 Club of the Year award at the Bowls England annual dinner in Coventry.

The Walliscote Road club’s president Reg Flicker received the splendid trophy from his Bowls England counterpart Stuart Lake at the dinner, which was also attended by club vice-president Bob Rossiter, captain Mike Clay and secretary Tony Mannion.

Clarence were Club of the Year runners-up in 2011, the first year they had entered, and were congratulated for having led the way consistently among all England’s clubs in recruitment, junior development and encouraging people to play bowls.

Their triumph has earned them, among other prizes £250 cash; four sets of bowls from Drakes Pride, the competition sponsors; the Tony Allcock Trophy; a flag; and a match against the Bowls England President’s team in September.

President Flicker said: “It was a proud moment for us all and we were given a terrific reception by everyone at the dinner.”

Clarence’s indoor season comes to a climax with competition finals weekend on March 23/24. The outdoor season starts with captain’s day on April 13.

CHEW Stoke visited Isle of Wedmore for the third mixed friendly of the season.

With the score at one-all, this would be the indoor decider between the clubs. In a marked turn-around from the previous match, Wedmore won on both rinks.

S Eastment led his side to a 31-7 victory and D Harrison skippered her side to a 30-8 win, with an overall score of 61-15.

The game was played in a good spirits and afterwards Chew Stoke captain, J Nicholson, spoke of the cordiality between the two clubs.
