Two Weston Boxing Club debutants gave a good impression on their first outing for the club.

WESTON Amateur Boxing Club members have been in action, with Wesley Williams, aged 11 and Lee Ayres (13) of Hewish, taking their first steps into the ring at Dursley.

Both boxers made their debuts in a skills contest, where the boxers just demonstrate their skills, only using semi-contact. At the end the boxers are not judged but are equally awarded trophies.

Wesley faced David Fris of Yate and put on a polished performance to show he is ready for full competition. Lee also showed he too was ready for competitive boxing when he fought Bradley Bristow, also of Yate, putting together a solid display.

The Weston club went to Bedminster, Bristol, with three boxers. Scott Davey, aged 12, Lee Ayres (13) and light middleweight Adam Bowers (23).

Unfortunately the younger two where unable to box due to a mix up in the weights, so Adam Bowers of Worle had to don the black and gold of Weston in his fifth contest this season, having won two and lost two.

He was determined to finish the season on the plus side, but standing in his way was unbeaten Jason Locke of Sweatbox ABC, Bedminster. Adam was advised by his cornermen Sheridan Davey and Shane Main to take the bull by the horns from the opening bell.

Adam did just that, exploding forward from the bell he set about Locke with ferocious combinations, forcing Locke to receive a standing count from the referee. The Weston lad stretched his lead further with a similar display in the second.

He did allow Locke back in it in the third as he tired, but he had done enough early on to record a unanimous decision win.

Wallace Attwell, aged 12, of Hewish, made his full competitive debut for Weston when he faced Barnstaple’s Mitch Turner. The first round was a close contest and in the second, Attwell demonstrated good skill to win the round.

In the third, Attwell was a bit over zealous, but did enough overall to win a split decision

Weston travel to Swindon for their final tournament of the season next weekend, where Scott Davey puts his unbeaten record on the line.
